Empowerment of women is vital to the family, community and society at large and more so to the rural poor women. A majority of rural women not only lack basic education, but also are deprived of the opportunities for growth. Their poverty in the areas of economic, social and educational levels cries for attention. Taking into account of their pathetic situation the Province of Bangalore began an organization called WORD (Women Oriented Rural Developmental Society.) It is purely a non-profit making Society, working as a registered body for the past twelve years. Its aim and objectives are geared towards the social, economical development and empowerment of the marginalized women and children in the rural areas. 

Since women development is the key factor for the development of the family, of the village, of the nation, most of the programmes target on motivating and enriching them to become self-reliant and independent. The seminars and workshops organised are comprised of activities that help them become aware of their situations, root causes to their problems and guide them to find ways to solve them. They are also taught how to read and write, share ideas and work together. Besides these, they are made aware of their role in the family and society, importance of health and hygiene and the need of educating their children.
